2002: Payment Requires Authentication
What This Means
This error means the customer's bank requires additional cardholder authentication — such as 3-D Secure (3DS) or Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) — before the payment can be approved. QPilot processes Scheduled Orders as off-session (automatic) charges, and this kind of step-up authentication requires the customer to be present to approve the payment. Because it cannot be completed automatically during scheduled processing, the charge could not be finalized.
Note: This is not a card decline. The payment method itself has not been rejected — the bank is simply asking the customer to verify the transaction directly.
Common Causes For This Error
- The issuing bank flagged the charge for Strong Customer Authentication (3DS / SCA).
- The card requires the customer to approve the payment interactively before it can be charged.
Suggested Next Steps
- Review the Processing Cycle for the Scheduled Order to confirm that the charge stopped because authentication was required.
- Have the customer complete the authentication. Because a scheduled (off-session) charge cannot prompt the customer, the payment needs to be completed in a context where the customer is present — for example, by placing an on-session order.
- Alternatively, the customer can switch to a card that does not require step-up authentication.
Note: Because this is not a decline, QPilot does not send an automatic "update your payment method" dunning email for this error. The resolution is for the customer to complete authentication or switch to a card that does not require it — not simply to re-enter the same payment details.
After Resolving The Issue
Once the customer has completed authentication or switched to a card that does not require it, use the action to Restart Processing the Failed Scheduled Order.
